About Us

“His situation, insofar as he was a machine, was complex, tragic, and laughable. But the sacred part of him, his awareness, remained an unwavering band of light” — Kurt Vonnegut Jr., Breakfast of Champions

Sacred Machines is a rock duo (originally known as “Borderline”), formed in 1988 by Dave Carruthers and the artist known as RE-VO, and re-united in 2020. It is a semi-progressive band whose work is rooted in deep critique of modern and postmodern civilization, with its emphasis on the unsustainable practices of materialism and consumerism. Sacred Machines also explores the developmental psychology of humans, and of the creatures to whom science-fiction titan Kurt Vonnegut referred as “sacred machines.”

Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

“As for myself: I had come to the conclusion that there was nothing sacred about myself or any human being, that we were all machines, doomed to collide and collide and collide. For want of anything better to do, we became fans of collisions. Sometimes I wrote well about collisions, which meant I was a writing machine in good repair. Sometimes I wrote badly, which meant I was a writing machine in bad repair. I no more harbored sacredness than did a Pontiac, a mousetrap, or a South Bend Lathe.”–Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

Our Mission

The mission of Sacred Machines is to reveal the hypocrisy, the corruption, and even the lost wisdom traditions of the Earth’s most dangerous creature: the human.
