Lonely Child

Lonely Child is a true story about a friend of Sacred Machines, a man who was given up for adoption when he was just a little boy. The song pertains to the man’s feelings of abandonment and loss, and how these affected his development and his happiness as he proceeded through life. The story does have a happy ending–eventually the man is reunited with his mother… and though once, he felt loss, now he is “found.”

LONELY CHILD
(Carruthers/RE-VO) (2018)

I’m three and a half, maybe four,
and they ask me this question:
“Do you want to stay with us?”
Without a thought, I whisper, “Yes.”

Didn’t know my name,
who I was, where I came from,
but when I close my eyes,
I see your face, I hear you say….

Lonely child, I know you need to know
Lonely child, I didn’t give you up… I let you go.

My early high school days
are played in bonfires of desire,
chasing shadows of a woman
who holds the secret to my world.

I don’t know my name,
who I am, where I came from,
but when I close my eyes,
I see your face, I hear you say….

Lonely child, I know you need to know
Lonely child, I didn’t give you up… I let you go.

As the years pass on by, I move from town to town.
On a hot day in July, we meet face to face, I’m found.

Now, I know my name, who I am, where I came from,
and when I close my eyes, I see your face smiling.
