Pictures of Matchstick Men

This piece of psychedelia is the only song performed by Sacred Machines which was not written by Carruthers and RE-VO. In 1988, the duo considered many classic songs to cover, but decided on this unusual work in no small part because of its obscurity–a song that other bands were unlikely to cover. The song, written by Rossi (1968) was originally performed by his band, Status Quo.

PICTURES OF MATCHSTICK MEN

written by Francis Rossi © 1968, Rossi Publishing/Valley Music

When I look up to the sky
I see your eyes, a funny kind of yellow
I rush home to bed, I sunk my head
I see your face underneath my pillow

Windows echo your reflection
When I look in their direction gone
When will this haunting stop
Your face, it just won’t leave me alone

Pictures of matchstick men and you
Images of matchstick men and you
All I ever see is them and you

You are in the sky,
And with this sky, you make me cry, you lie.

I wake next morning, tired still yawning
See your face come peeking through my window

Windows echo your reflection
When I look in their direction gone
When will this haunting stop
Your face, it just won’t leave me alone

Pictures of matchstick men and you
Images of matchstick men and you
All I ever see is them and you

You’re in the sky and with the sky
You make me cry, you lie
You’re in the sky and with the sky
You make me cry, you lie
