Face It

Face It (We Don’t Know What We’re Doing) is a cry of resignation to an ignorant culture of voters that manages to thwart its own efforts at every turn. We allow rich corporate elites to pillage, and we admire and continue to adore and elect those same pillagers, over and over. We repeatedly vote into power corrupt elitists, who then enact legislation against our interests. We are slaves to money, worshippers of Mammon, and in a Populist culture, we elevate billionaires. The hook of the song is sardonic, and yet sincere: Face It (We Don’t Know What We’re Doing) may be tongue-in-cheek, and yet this catchy R&B/Funk song is a welcome wake-up call to every discerning citizen.

FACE IT (We Don’t Know What We’re Doing)
(Carruthers/RE-VO) (2018)

Restless on a Monday night,
I walk the streets in search of life.
I hear the same old story ’bout a guy in a suit,
stealing for the glory of it, hidin’ all the money

Listen to the government,
out of touch and arrogant.
They all feed from the same piggy trough,
all play the same game, all have the same name

Face it, we don’t know what we’re doing.
People like to think we do.
Face it, we don’t know what we’re doing.
Sorry, I just thought you knew, and I depended on you.

Headlines blare the same old fools.
Read it everywhere you wander.
What did you learn in school today?
I learned to work to rule. I learned to be a fool.

Money’s got us out of control,
overpaid or getting by.
Politicians rant, and we lay down,
all play the same game, all have the same name.

Face it, we don’t know what we’re doing.
People like to think we do.
Face it, we don’t know what we’re doing.
Sorry, I just thought you knew, and I depended on you

Something’s gotta change.
Turnin’ the page.
We all have the right to freedom,
but we let the politics stay the same.
I can’t trust what they say.
